Second primary school
The 2nd Primary School of Vrontados is situated in the center of Vrontados, close to the church of Panagia Erithiani. This school has a beautiful stone building in a neoclassic design. It was founded in 1911 and inaugurated in 1913, few months after the liberation of Chios from the Turkish oppression. But this school has a long lasting history, which starts in 1846, the year when the school was established on the precinct.
When the disastrous earthquake of 1881 happened in Chios, there was stood one shanty, which offered hospitality to the school, in the westernmost side from the present school building. This was a school only for boys.
After the earthquake of 1881 a girls school was built in a place that the parish church is now situated. The School building of 1913, became mixed before the Second World War. The first years of operation and for a long time, the school was three classed. Then became four classed, five classed and since 1994 sixth classed. Since 1997 - 1998 there had been one more teacher in the school.
Students are taught lessons in English, music, gymnastics and Olympic culture by qualified teachers. The students, who study at those two schools, come from the parishes of Panagia Erithiani, Prophet Iliah and Panagia Moutsena.
In the 2nd Primary School of Vrontados, which today has 6 classes, every year students and teachers, with the help of the board of governors and donators, do theatrical performances, performances of Greek traditional dances, athletic games and programs to protect nature and environment. Since 1998 -1999 the school was placed among the European Educational Program called "Eco Schools".
Also from 1983 is published the school's newspaper "Erithianousika Titivismata", which until today has won four pan Hellenic awards: from the newspaper "THE NEWS" (May 1996), from the Journalism Promotion Institution "Athanasiou V. Botsi" (April 1997), from the Woman's Literary Society (December 1997). Also the School's Library has won a pan Hellenic award by the Greek Children's Book Coterie (April 1998). This library is well organized and operates in a well tidy up place.
During the years this school has had great teachers and creative students. Most of them became excellent seamen and model mothers. But there were quite few of them, who studied and became one of the betters in their sciences. One of them managed to be a Patriarch, another one Astrophysics scientist in NASA, another a Literary man of pan Hellenic range.
There were also many more, who did great things in other sections. In the 2nd Primary School building is also situated the 2nd Kindergarten of Vrontados.
The history of this school's establishment is known by narrations and traditions. There are no records saved, because of the great historical events, which took place the previous years and because of the disastrous earthquakes. Before the big earthquake of 22 March 1881 the Primary School of Saint Mark in Vrontados, keeping up on church's care, operated in privately owned houses, which used to be called 'Schools', each of them. After the earthquake and, until 1890, the teaching continued to take place at the houses.
